Low alloy structural steel refers to the alloy structural steel with less than 5% of the total alloy composition. The steel has a similar carbon content to mild steel and is strengthened by a small amount of alloying elements to improve toughness and weldability. Its strength is much higher than carbon steel of the same carbon respect. Widely used in pressure vessels, chemical equipment, boilers, Bridges, vehicles, ships and large steel structures. Alloying elements manganese, silicon and molybdenum can cause solution strengthening. Vanadium and niobium can refine grain and improve toughness. Molybdenum can improve hardenability, promote the acquisition of bainite structure, but also improve the thermal strength.
