Butt fusion welding is the established hot plate welding technique for thermoplastic pipes — one of two main methods for fusion joining polyethylene gas and water pipe. The heating phase (bead-up) involves pressing pipe ends against the heated plate for a set duration. This is followed by the heat soak phase where pressure reduces to just hold the pipe ends on the hot plate, allowing heat absorption into the material. After heat soak, the hot plate is removed and pipe ends are brought together — the dwell time must be minimized. The final phase is welding/cooling, set according to pipe diameter and wall thickness.
