At the initial engine starting stage, there is no lubricant on the engine cylinder bore and pistons. Low temperature causes lubricant to increase in viscosity, causing it hard to splash lubricant on to the engine cylinder or pistons. With HLN coolant heaters, the lubricant becomes warm before the engine starts, making the entire cylinder – piston system better lubricated and protected at the engine starting stage. Thus, engine wear reduces significantly and long-term vehicle maintenance cost also reduced.
