This type of weathering steel forms a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years.The steel forms a protective layer on the surface when exposed to weather (sun, rain etc); and this continues to regenerate while exposed - i.e. the steel is allowed to "rust" in order to form the protective coating.
