ULTEM (PEI) Plastic CNC Machining Services
ULTEM (Polyetherimide), also known as PEI, is an amber translucent engineering plastic offering superior hardness, excellent insulation properties, and outstanding wear resistance compared to PTFE materials.
ULTEM Material Grades
We machine three primary ULTEM formulations with varying glass fiber content:
- ULTEM 1000: Base material without glass fiber reinforcement
- ULTEM 2100 GF10: Contains 10% glass fiber for enhanced hardness
- ULTEM 2300 GF30: Contains 30% glass fiber for maximum wear resistance
Machining Difficulty & Tool Wear
Machining difficulty increases with glass fiber content: ULTEM 2300 > ULTEM 2100 > ULTEM 1000. Our testing shows tool wear of 0.03mm after 3.5 hours of continuous machining, requiring parameter adjustments for dimensional accuracy.
Optimized Machining Process
- Two-step machining process: rough machining followed by finish machining
- 0.5mm machining allowance reserved for final precision operations
- Spray and compressed air cooling to prevent stress rupture in non-crystalline plastic structure
