PEI (Polyetherimide), commercially known as ULTEM, features an amber translucent appearance with superior mechanical properties including high hardness, excellent insulation, and exceptional wear resistance. The material offers outstanding machining performance with three primary formulations:
- ULTEM 1000 - Standard grade
- ULTEM 2100 GF10 - With 10% glass fiber reinforcement
- ULTEM 2300 GF30 - With 30% glass fiber reinforcement
Glass fiber reinforcement significantly enhances hardness and wear resistance properties.

PEI machining presents greater challenges than PTFE due to its high hardness. Our analysis shows 0.03mm tool wear after 3.5 hours of continuous ULTEM machining, requiring precise parameter adjustments to compensate for dimensional changes.
We implement a two-step machining approach:
- Rough Machining - Initial material removal
- Micro Machining - Final precision finishing with 0.5mm machining allowance
To prevent stress rupture in ULTEM's non-crystalline plastic structure, our CNC machining centers utilize spray and compressed air cooling systems.
