Plastic materials exhibit thermal expansion rates more than 10 times greater than metals. Additionally, plastic parts dissipate heat slower than metal components and have significantly lower softening (melting) temperatures. These factors require specialized engineering approaches to prevent workpiece deformation during machining processes.
Increasing feed rates and milling speeds reduces machining time while improving heat dissipation conditions. However, higher CNC milling speeds generate increased temperatures. Engineering data indicates that a 10% increase in cutting speed raises plastic surface temperatures by approximately 14-30%.
While standard coolants are suitable for most plastic machining applications, they may cause stress rupture in amorphous plastics including ULTEM, PC, and PPSU. For these materials, our facility utilizes spray cooling and compressed air systems to ensure optimal results.
