Key Characteristics & Advantages
-
Excellent Flex and Hand Feel: The 8-strand construction makes it very flexible, smooth, and easy to handle. It doesn't kink like 3-strand rope and is easy to splice.
-
Round and Stable: It maintains a round cross-section under load, which is ideal for applications where it runs through pulleys, blocks, or winches smoothly.
-
Floats: Like all polypropylene, it is lighter than water, making it perfect for marine, rescue, and any application on the water.
-
Economical: Polypropylene is one of the least expensive synthetic fibers, making this rope a cost-effective choice for many applications.
-
Chemical & Mildew Resistant: It is resistant to most chemicals, oils, and solvents, and will not rot or mildew, which is great for wet/damp environments.
-
Slightly Elastic: It has a small amount of give (much less than nylon), which can be beneficial for absorbing light shock loads.
Disadvantages & Limitations
-
UV Degradation: This is the biggest weakness. Polypropylene degrades relatively quickly in prolonged sunlight. For permanent outdoor use, a UV-stabilized version is a must, but even then, its life is shorter than polyester or nylon.
-
Low Melting Point & Abrasion Resistance: It has the lowest heat resistance of common synthetics (melts around 320°F/160°C) and poor abrasion resistance compared to polyester or nylon. It's not suitable for high-friction applications.
-
Strength: While strong for its weight, it has lower strength-to-diameter ratios than polyester, nylon, or high-performance fibers. You'll often need a thicker diameter for the same job.
-
Creep: It can stretch permanently over time under constant heavy load (creep), which is not ideal for critical, long-term tension applications.
- Floats: Major safety and convenience feature
- Excellent Abrasion Resistance: Tough and long-lasting
- Good UV Resistance: Thanks to the polyester cover
- Cost-Effective: Provides great durability for the price
- Rot & Mildew Proof: Synthetic fibers won't rot like natural fibers
