Description

The simplest TN LCD panel consists of two polarizers, two glass substrates with transparent electrodes, ITO (indium tin oxide), and a thin layer of liquid crystal material sandwiched between the electrodes.

When the voltage is turned off, natural light from the light source becomes polarized line light through the top polarizer. When it encounters nematic liquid crystal molecules, it twists together with the liquid crystal twisted layer Twist 90 degrees to reach the bottom polarizer through the bottom glass. Due to the polarization light being parallel to the bottom polarizer, through the polarizer, we can see light (white or gray pixels).

When the voltage is turned on, the liquid crystal molecules will be perpendicular to the glass surface and lose their distortion under the action of an electric field. When polarized light encounters a nematic liquid crystal layer, it maintains its original transparency without distortion Due to the vertical position of the linear light and the bottom polarizer, it will be blocked by the bottom polarizer. We did indeed see light (black pixels)

In summary, we understand that:

We have a positive display above, which is a black character on a white or gray background.
There are two modes for glass panels. Positive mode (white/gray background with black text) or negative mode (black background with white/gray text). The reason why TN LCD cannot obtain a paper white background is that polarization truncates most of the light, and only 20% to 40% of the light can pass through TN LCD.
