MIG welding is a low cost, quick and safe method of joining sheet metals such as mild steel and Aluminum. MIG welding combines a wire feed to feed solid filler wire to the weld joint. The wire feed is connected to a constant voltage power supply that creates the arc to melt the wire when it hits the weld joint. Before the wire creates an arc there needs to be a shielding gas feed through the system.
MIG welding is an autodidactic process, meaning you can learn it yourself. First you need to decide whether you prefer stick or flux cored welding. Stick is the best for small weld jobs because the filler metal does not act as a shield against heat, making it easy to weld. Flux-cored wire requires shielding gas which makes it difficult and tight to fit into smaller spaces. Welding with flux core requires a much more complicated operation than sticking, but it does produce quality results even on less-than-perfect surfaces because welding with flux core creates a positive shielded arc that melts the wire tip and starts the weld process
