Product Description
7020-T6 Weldable Structural Round Aluminum Bar
The 7020-T6 round aluminum bar is a medium-strength, zinc-magnesium alloy specifically developed for welded structural applications in defense, military vehicle, and armor plate fabrication industries. With its balanced chemical composition centered around 4.5% zinc and 1.2% magnesium, this alloy achieves a unique combination of properties: adequate mechanical strength for structural load-bearing, excellent weldability across all standard welding processes, and most importantly, the ability to naturally recover strength in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) after welding without requiring post-weld heat treatment.
Key Features
  • Outstanding Weldability: Specifically formulated for fusion welding using TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and friction stir welding processes without hot cracking susceptibility.
  • Post-Weld Natural Age Hardening: Recovers 85-95% of original T6 strength in the weld heat-affected zone through natural aging at ambient temperature over approximately 30 days.
  • Ballistic Performance: Medium-strength properties combined with excellent ductility provide favorable ballistic resistance characteristics against small arms fire and fragmentation.
  • Medium Structural Strength: Minimum tensile strength of 350 MPa and yield strength of 280 MPa provide adequate load-bearing capacity for military vehicle applications.
  • Stress Corrosion Resistance: The over-aged T6 temper provides good resistance to stress corrosion cracking in the short transverse direction.
  • Low Residual Stress: Controlled quenching and stress relief stretching minimizes internal residual stresses, reducing distortion during machining.

Applications
7020-T6 round aluminum bars are primarily specified for defense and military vehicle fabrication programs where the combination of weldability, ballistic performance, and structural strength is essential. Applications include armored personnel carrier hull structural members, military bridging systems, naval vessel superstructure components, ballistic protection systems, and high-performance welded bicycle frames. The alloy's excellent anodizing response also makes it suitable for architectural welded structures where both structural integrity and aesthetic surface finish are required.
Packaging & Quality Assurance
All 7020-T6 round aluminum bars are protected with anti-rust oil and individually wrapped in VCI paper. Bars are securely bundled in ISPM 15 certified plywood cases with adequate internal bracing. Each shipment includes comprehensive EN 10204 3.1 material certification documenting chemical composition, mechanical properties, and inspection results. Complete traceability is maintained from certified primary aluminum billet through final dimensional inspection.
