The function of the Guide; Bridge
-
Precise guidance and movement trajectory limitation: The core task of the valve bridge is to synchronously drive multiple valves. The guide rod cooperates with the guide hole on the valve bridge to forcefully restrict the valve bridge to move only up and down reciprocally along the guide rod. For example, in engines equipped with a hydraulic lash adjuster mechanism, it can prevent the valve bridge from tilting when one end loses support under braking conditions, thereby solving the problem that the brake valve cannot seat normally and affecting braking effect; at the same time, it can also limit the rotation of the valve bridge, preventing it from shifting, swinging, etc. during movement, and ensuring the precise trajectory of valve opening and closing.
-
Preventing the valve bridge from falling off: During engine operation, if carbon deposition on the valve stem increases friction, or insufficient oil supply leads to poor lubrication of the valve, the valve seating may be delayed, resulting in an increased gap between the valve and the rocker arm, and a risk that the valve bridge will be thrown out or fall off. The guide rod is inserted into the guide hole of the valve bridge to effectively limit the valve bridge. Even in the above abnormal situations, it can avoid serious engine failures caused by the falling off of the valve bridge.
-
Transmitting lateral force to reduce component wear: When the rocker arm drives the valve bridge to move, the horizontal displacement at the contact part between the two causes the valve bridge to bear lateral force. The guide rod is connected to the cylinder head, which can transmit these lateral forces to the cylinder head, preventing the lateral forces from being transmitted to the valve and valve guide through the valve bridge, reducing wear on the valve guide and valve stem, and also improving the eccentric wear problem during the cooperative movement of the valve and valve seat, extending the service life of related components in the valve train.
How to operate the valve bridge guide rod
-
Initial State (Valve Closed)
The valve bridge guide rod is fixedly mounted on the
cylinder head, with its shaft passing through the guide hole of the valve bridge. A small fit clearance is reserved between them (some designs are pre-coated with lubricating oil or supplied with oil through oil passages). At this time, the valve bridge is lifted by the elastic force of the valve spring, maintaining slight contact with the rocker arm. The guide rod exerts a
radial limit effect on the valve bridge, preventing it from shifting or shaking during standstill or idling.
-
Valve Opening Phase
When the cam of the engine camshaft pushes up the rocker arm, the rocker arm exerts downward pressure on the middle position of the valve bridge. Subjected to the force, the valve bridge moves linearly downward along the
axial direction of the guide rod. The guide rod forcibly restricts the valve bridge to only move up and down, preventing it from tilting or rotating.
Meanwhile, the
lateral component force generated by the contact between the rocker arm and the valve bridge is borne by the guide rod and transmitted to the cylinder head, avoiding the lateral force acting on the valve stem and valve guide, and reducing wear between the two parts.
During the downward movement of the valve bridge, it synchronously pushes the valves at both ends to overcome the elastic force of the valve springs, opening the valves to realize the intake or exhaust of the cylinder.
-
Valve Closing Phase
After the cam rotates past its highest point, the pressure of the rocker arm gradually decreases. The rebound force of the valve spring pushes the valves upward to reset, which in turn drives the valve bridge to move linearly upward along the guide rod.
