They can be manual or automated, and come in two main categories of diaphragm valves. The first type is weir, or saddle, and the second is called a straightway valve that seals over a seat. The weir, or saddle version, consists of two ports in line with each other located on opposite sides of the valve and is most commonly used in throttling or on/off applications.
