A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.
Types of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
As mentioned above, there are two different types of VAWT to choose from. While we briefly covered these types above, now we'll learn more about each type and discuss important factors you should know. First, let's look at the Darrieus wind turbine model.
Darius wind turbine
Darrieus wind turbines are often referred to as "egg beater" turbines. It was invented by George Darius in 1931. The Darius is a high-speed, low-torque machine suitable for generating alternating current. Darrieus usually needs to be pushed manually, so some external power is needed to start turning, as the starting torque is very low. Darrieus has two vertically oriented blades that rotate around a vertical axis.
Darrieus wind turbines have the following characteristics:
- These egg beater-shaped turbines are highly efficient, however, they are not as reliable.
- In order to use Darrieus wind turbines, there must be an external power source to start them
- It is in your best interest to choose a wind turbine with at least three blades.
- To support such a wind turbine, it is necessary to install a superstructure near the top bearing, connecting it.
