Why we should use fully recyclable packaging?

With the continuous improvement of people's awareness of environmental protection, the upgrading of packaging materials has gradually reached a consensus in the industry, mono material has become the dominant direction of the flexible packaging industry. In January 2020, the United Nations Environment Programme report mentioned:

1. Commitment to plan to achieve 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable plastic packaging by 2025.

2. Government signatories work with industry and other stakeholders to achieve a 70% recycling rate for plastic packaging by 2025.

3. Unilever (50%), Mars (25%) and PepsiCo (20%) set their 2025 target to reduce the use of virgin plastic in packaging. Packager brands and retailers have pledged to increase the recycled content of their packaging by an average of 22% by 2025.

From the perspective of environmental protection trends at home and abroad, the government and major terminal brands are determined to use single-material recyclable packaging to promote the development of circular economy, which is the general trend.

In the production of flexible packaging, biodegradable materials and paper to replace plastic packaging have attracted more and more attention, but the main trend of sustainable development of flexible packaging is still to follow the 3R principles in the production of plastic films, namely: reduce, recycle (recycle) and reuse (reuse). Among them, reduction refers to the scientific reduction of the overall thickness and number of layers of the packaging, which requires simultaneously improving the performance of the film and equipment.

In order to make flexible packaging recyclable, composite films of different materials should be avoided, such as the traditional PET/PE structure, which is known to be almost impossible to recycle. Monomaterial packaging is growing as the new industry standard, which can be achieved by coating a single layer of film with functional fluids or multi-layer composite structures such as MDOPE/PE. In the production of mono-material packaging, the main challenge is to maintain some functional requirements, such as optical properties, barrier properties, mechanical properties, sealing, etc.

The focus of our future development of a mono material is also to work hard in the direction of how to solve the barrier and heat resistance.

Although there will be many challenges and technical difficulties in the development of mono-material packaging, the recyclability of mono-material composites is feasible. Single-material compounding makes flexible packaging recycling valuable and gives flexible packaging a second life.
