Scope of application:

904L is a stainless steel alloy with high corrosion resistance, especially in sour environments. The addition of copper and carbon gives it its unique properties, and copper acts as a fortifier against corrosive acids. The small amount of carbon in its composition allows 904L to improve weldability and cleanliness to prevent continuous wear. The combination of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper in its composition gives 904L excellent resistance to sulfuric acid. This metal was developed to prevent corrosion where such acids are used or applied. Therefore, 904L is approved for the production and concentration of acids, and the transport of such substances.
In terms of working, both hot and cold working are possible; however, the metal does not harden by hot working, only by cold working. The most common operations, such as those used to handle grades 304, 316 and 317 stainless steel, are also valid for 904L. Also, metals are slow to harden when working, and most welding methods are sufficient to produce the desired results.
