About 443 Stainless Steel
443 stainless steel is a ferritic alloy containing chromium and titanium with extremely low carbon content. This composition provides strong corrosion resistance, particularly against moisture and salt. While most ferritic alloys don't match austenitic alloys in durability, the high chromium content in 443 makes it at least as corrosion-resistant as 304 stainless steel.
Compared to 304 stainless, 443 exhibits less thermal expansion, resulting in reduced stress and warping under heat. The material's magnetic properties (due to high chromium content) don't indicate lower quality—chromium remains one of the most corrosion-resistant metals available.
This newer ferritic stainless steel offers excellent rust resistance and good formability through reduced carbon content while increasing chromium and adding titanium. These properties approximate 304 grade performance while providing cost advantages, making 443 suitable for replacing 304 in many applications.
