316L Stainless Steel Properties
Grade 316L is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel, offering enhanced corrosion resistance and immunity to sensitization. This molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel provides superior performance in chloride environments and maintains excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Excellent performance in atmospheric environments and corrosive media, with superior resistance compared to 304 stainless steel. Resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to 1000 mg/L at ambient temperatures. While considered a marine grade, 316L may exhibit surface corrosion in warm seawater environments.
Heat Resistance
Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 870°C and continuous service to 925°C. The low carbon content of 316L provides enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation in the 425-860°C range.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment (annealing) at 1010-1120°C followed by rapid cooling. 316L cannot be hardened by thermal treatment methods.
Welding
Excellent weldability using all standard fusion and resistance methods. Post-weld annealing is not required for 316L, unlike standard 316 grade. Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding.
Machining
Tends to work harden during machining. Recommended practices include low speeds and constant feed rates. The lower carbon content makes 316L easier to machine compared to standard 316.
Hot and Cold Working
Suitable for hot working at 1150-1260°C and common cold working operations. Post-work annealing is recommended to maximize corrosion resistance and relieve internal stresses.
Hardening
Cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Can be strengthened through cold working processes.
