Material Description
17-4PH (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This grade maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
General Properties
Alloy 17-4 PH combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi). Not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C) or at very low temperatures.

Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.
Age Hardening: Achieved through low-temperature aging processes. Typical conditions include H900 (482°C for 1 hour) through H1150 (621°C for 4 hours) with corresponding mechanical property adjustments.
Processing Characteristics
Welding: Can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating requirement.
Machining: Best machined in solution-treated condition with rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
