Material Description
17-4PH (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. It maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
General Properties
Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).
Applications
- Offshore applications (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
- Food processing industry
- Pulp and paper industry
- Aerospace components (turbine blades)
- Mechanical components
- Nuclear waste casks
Standards
- ASTM A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400
- EURONORM 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4
- AFNOR Z5 CNU 17-4PH
- DIN 1.4542

Alternative Grade Comparison
| Alternative Grade | Reason for Choosing 17-4PH |
|---|---|
| 431 | 431 has higher toughness but 17-4PH offers better strength characteristics |
| 416 | 416 is free-machining but 17-4PH provides superior strength |
| 316 | 316 has higher corrosion resistance but much lower strength than 17-4PH |
| 2205 | 2205 offers better corrosion resistance with lower strength than 17-4PH |
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment (Condition A): Heated at 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cooled to 30°C. Small sections can be oil quenched.
Hardening: Age-hardened at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties. During processing, superficial discoloration occurs with shrinkage of 0.10% for condition H1150 and 0.05% for condition H900.
| Condition | Hardening Temp (°C) | Time (h) | Typical Hardness (HRC) | Tensile Strength (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Ann | - | 36 | 1100 |
| H900 | 482 | 1 | 44 | - |
| H925 | 496 | 4 | 42 | 1170-1320 |
| H1025 | 552 | 4 | 38 | 1070-1220 |
| H1075 | 580 | 4 | 36 | 1000-1150 |

| H1150 | 621 | 4 | 33 | 930-1080 |
Fabrication Properties
Welding: Grade 630 stainless steels can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating. Care should be taken in designing and welding high-strength steels to prevent weldment stresses.
Machining: Can be machined in solution-treated condition with machining rates similar to grade 304 stainless steels.
Product Applications
- Engine components
- High-strength boat propeller shafts
- Plastic molding dies
- Valves and gears
