Material Description
About 304/304L Stainless Steel
AISI 304 stainless steel (UNS S30400) is the most widely used stainless steel, containing 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel. Also known as 18-8 stainless steel, SS 304 is non-magnetic under annealing conditions but may become weakly magnetic after cold working processes. Type 304 offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion and oxidation, with its high nickel-chromium alloy content providing superior corrosion resistance, making it the standard food grade stainless steel in the food industry.
Grade Variants: 304L (ultra-low carbon), 304N (nitrogen-containing), 304H (improved creep performance), and type 302 (higher carbon content). Compared to AISI 304, 316 grade stainless steel contains reduced chromium, increased nickel, and added 2-3% molybdenum for enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
