17-4PH Precipitation Hardening (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).

General Characteristics

Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and excellent corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).

Technical Performance
Corrosion Resistance

Alloy 17-4 PH demonstrates superior corrosion resistance compared to standard hardenable stainless steels, performing comparably to Alloy 304 in most media. For stress corrosion cracking prevention, aging temperatures above 1022°F (550°C) are recommended, with 1094°F (590°C) optimal for H2S media applications.

Heat Treatment

Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.

Age Hardening: Various temperature and time combinations achieve specific mechanical properties with minimal dimensional changes.

Fabrication

Welding: Compatible with all conventional welding methods without pre-heating requirements.

Machining: Best performed in solution-treated condition with machining rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
