Material Description
17-4PH (Precipitation Hardening) Stainless Steel, also known as Type 630, is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
General Properties
Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade combines exceptional high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and excellent corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).

Corrosion Resistance
Alloy 17-4 PH provides superior corrosion resistance compared to standard hardenable stainless steels and is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For applications with potential stress corrosion cracking risks, higher aging temperatures above 1022°F (550°C) are recommended. The alloy demonstrates excellent resistance in chemical, petroleum, paper, dairy, and food processing industries.

Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.
Hardening: Age-hardened at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties. Typical hardening conditions include:
