About 321 Stainless Steel
Alloy 321 (UNS S32100) is a stabilized stainless steel that offers excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800 to 1500°F (427 to 816°C). This alloy is stabilized against chromium carbide formation by the addition of titanium.
Alloy 321 stainless steel provides superior performance in high-temperature applications due to its excellent mechanical properties. It offers higher creep and stress rupture properties than Alloy 304 and particularly Alloy 304L, making it suitable for applications where sensitization and intergranular corrosion are concerns.
This titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel maintains excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures between 800-1500°F (427-816°C). The alloy resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and demonstrates superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to alloys 304 and 304L, while maintaining good low-temperature toughness.
Alloy 321H (UNS S32109) is the higher carbon (0.04-0.10) version developed for enhanced creep resistance and higher strength at temperatures above 1000°F (537°C). In most cases, the carbon content enables dual certification. Alloy 321 stainless steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working, and can be easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
