904L Stainless Steel Introduction
Grade 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel contains added copper to improve resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulphuric acid. The steel offers excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion, is non-magnetic, and provides superior formability, toughness, and weldability. While containing high amounts of expensive ingredients like molybdenum and nickel, many applications previously using grade 904L are now served by cost-effective duplex stainless steel 2205.
Corrosion Resistance Properties
904L stainless steel demonstrates excellent resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content provides superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, while copper addition enhances resistance to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents in both aggressive and mild conditions. Its corrosion resistance falls between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades.
