Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Excellent performance in atmospheric environments and corrosive media, with superior resistance compared to 304 stainless steel. Resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments. Suitable for potable water with up to 1000 mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 870°C and continuous service to 925°C. Grade 316L offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation, making it suitable for high-temperature applications.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment (annealing) recommended at 1010-1120°C with rapid cooling. These grades cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Machining & Working
Machining: Requires low speeds and constant feed rates due to work hardening tendency. Easier to machine than 316 stainless steel.
Hot Working: Optimal temperature range 1150-1260°C, minimum 930°C.
Cold Working: Suitable for shearing, drawing, and stamping operations.
