Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Excellent performance in various atmospheric environments and corrosive media, offering superior resistance compared to 304 stainless steel. Resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, with stress corrosion cracking resistance above 60°C. Suitable for potable water with up to 1000 mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 870°C and continuous service to 925°C. 316L offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation, making it suitable for high-temperature applications where subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is important.
Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment (Annealing) - Heat to 1010-1120°C and cool rapidly. These grades cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Processing Capabilities
Machining
316L stainless steel tends to work harden if machined too quickly. Recommended practices include low speeds and constant feed rates. The lower carbon content makes 316L easier to machine compared to standard 316 stainless steel.
Hot and Cold Working
Suitable for most common hot working techniques with optimal temperatures between 1150-1260°C. Cold working operations including shearing, drawing, and stamping can be performed effectively. Post-work annealing is recommended to maximize corrosion resistance and remove internal stresses.
