430 Stainless Steel Overview
Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium, belonging to the ferritic group of steels. This steel is recognized for its excellent corrosion resistance, superior formability, and practical mechanical properties, making it suitable for various chemical applications.
Grade 430F stainless steel is typically supplied in bar form for use in automatic screw machines, while grade 434 offers similar properties with enhanced corrosion resistance due to its molybdenum content.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
All ferritic grades, including stainless steel grade 430, demonstrate excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Grade 430 provides good corrosion resistance to numerous substances, with maximum performance achieved in well-polished or buffed conditions. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to grade 304. Note that 430F, being a high-sulfur free machining grade, offers slightly reduced pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to non-free machining grades.
Heat Resistance
Stainless steel grade 430 maintains oxidation resistance up to 870°C (1598°F) in intermittent service and up to 815°C (1499°F) in continuous service. The material may exhibit brittleness at room temperature after prolonged exposure in the 400-600°C (752-1112°F) range, which can be mitigated through proper annealing.
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing involves heating to 815-845°C (1499-1553°F), followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C (1112°F) and subsequent rapid air cooling. Avoid slow cooling between 540-400°C (1004-752°F) to prevent embrittlement. For sub-critical annealing, heat to 760-815°C (1400-1499°F) followed by air cooling or water quenching. This stainless steel cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.
Welding
Pre-heating at 150-200°C (302-392°F) is required before welding grade 430. Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C (1454-1499°F) can address embrittlement in welded areas, though grain refinement will not occur. Recommended filler rods include grade 430, 308L, 309, or 310 based on specific application requirements.
Machining
Grade 430 offers improved machinability compared to standard austenitic steels like grade 304, though galling may occur. Lightly drawn bars provide better machining characteristics than annealed bars. Grade 430F is specifically designed for excellent machinability.
Fabrication
The low work hardening rate of grade 430 facilitates easy bending and forming operations. However, the material's limited ductility may restrict very rigorous forming operations. Grade 430 wire handles cold heading well, with sub-critical intermediate annealing recommended for extreme cold working applications.
Common Applications
- Dish washer linings
- Refrigerator cabinet panels
- Element supports and fasteners
- Stove trim rings and chimney liners
- Automotive trim and lashing wires
