405 Stainless Steel Introduction
General Properties
Alloy 405 is a 12% chromium stainless steel specifically designed for use in the as-welded condition. Unlike other 12% chromium stainless grades, 405 does not undergo extensive hardening through air cooling from high temperatures.

Corrosion Resistance
Provides the same corrosion resistance as Type 410 steel, with enhanced weldability for applications requiring superior joining capabilities.
Machinability
Type 405 offers excellent machinability due to its soft and ductile characteristics, making it suitable for various manufacturing processes.
Weldability
Can be welded using shielded fusion and resistance welding techniques. Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended. Post-weld annealing maximizes ductility and performance.
