Key Features of S32760 Super Duplex Stainless Steel
S32760 duplex steel features strong resistance to chloride corrosion, high thermal conductivity, and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content make it highly resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and other corrosion types. The excellent overall performance of S32760 duplex steel is superior to general dual phase steel such as 2205 and S31803.
S32760 duplex steel is resistant to various inorganic acids and organic acids. The copper addition provides resistance to non-oxidative acid corrosion. This material is also resistant to strong alkali corrosion, but is not suitable for long-term use above 300°C as prolonged exposure to high temperatures can reduce material toughness.
S32760 stainless steel was originally used as cast steel in the early 1980s to address insufficient corrosion resistance in second-generation duplex stainless steel 00Cr22Ni5Mo2N (2205). By the late 1980s, it became used as deformable material for pipeline systems. This super duplex was subsequently introduced as an important corrosion-resistant material for oil and gas development, seawater environments, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), desalination, and chemical applications.
S32760 stainless steel contains small amounts of tungsten and copper in addition to high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. Initially added to improve casting properties, tungsten and copper were later found to enhance corrosion resistance in certain acids and improve passivation ability in seawater.
Like other super duplex stainless steels, S32760 features a two-phase microstructure with α/γ close to 1 under solid solution conditions. However, improper thermal processing, heat treatment, or welding can cause intermetallic phases and nitrides to precipitate. At around 900°C for over 100 seconds, σ, χ, Cr2N phases may precipitate, while at about 475°C for over 800 seconds, α phase precipitation occurs. Sufficient cooling rates are essential to avoid these precipitates, and this super duplex stainless steel is not suitable for heat treatment that produces σ phase.
