In general the NH2 groups in melamine show an amide character. Melamine is a weak base and can react with various acids to yield melamine salts.
Hydrolysis of melamine in strong acids or base solutions results in a stepwise replacement of the amide groups by hydroxyl groups forming ammeline, am elide and cyan uric acid.
