Induction heating is an efficient process used to harden, bond, or soften metals or other conductive materials. This technology has allowed modern manufacturing processes to benefit from attractive combinations of speed, consistency, control, and energy efficiency ever since its emergence in the 1920s.
WWII marked a rapid development of induction technology in order to suit the urgent demands of its time. This technology had to be fast, reliable, and able to harden metal engine parts. More recently, an increased focus on lean manufacturing techniques and quality control have encouraged a rediscovery and further development of induction technology and precise, all-solid-state induction power supplies.
The basics of induction heating involve an alternating current being applied to a transformer. This produces an alternating magnetic field, and Faraday’s Law states that a current will be induced in the part placed within this field. Generally, a power supply would send an alternating current through a copper coil, and the workpiece would be placed inside this coil. This coil would act as the transformer’s primary, and the workpiece as the short circuit secondary.
Once the metal part enters the magnetic field, circulating eddy currents are induced. This, in turn, results in a rapid rise in temperature due to the heat produced from the eddy currents. As a result, induction heating has become an extremely versatile and efficient manufacturing process.
