​Combs are one component of the floor plate system. The comb is mounted on a comb plate to prevent foreign objects from entering the internal space of the escalator/moving walkway together with steps or pallets. It also helps a little to guide the step/pallet into the system return side on the right path. When the foreign matter lodged is large or under abnormal operating conditions, the step hits the comb, causing individual comb teeth to break, which increases the gap between the step and completion. This means an increased risk of step entrapment and a reduced level of safety for passengers riding escalators. In this case, the combs need to be replaced promptly and appropriately to restore the safety of the escalator.
