A manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor measures the intake manifold pressure and is typically found on the inlet manifold, next or on the throttle body. This sensor provides intake pressure information to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), allowing it to calculate air density and determine the air-fuel mixture for the combustion process. The data it provides is also used to measure engine load, fuel injection pulse, and adjust the ignition timing.

MAP sensors can be used to look for throttle performance issues, and to check for a vacuum leak in the intake manifold. It signals can be converted to air mass data by combining engine speed and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor data. In addition, MAP Sensors are often used in OBD II cars to determine if a vehicle’s Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is working properly as a back-up to the Mass Airflow Sensor or MAF sensor (which measures the air density and volume).
