The vacuum sampler collects air samples in a pre-vacuumed sampling canister, which can be used for both instantaneous and averaged samples. Instantaneous samples are collected simply by opening the valve of the sampling canister and using the vacuum inside the canister to draw the air sample into the canister for a short period of time (usually less than 5 seconds). The sample collected in this way represents the surrounding air pollution conditions at the moment the valve is opened. The collection of averaged samples (also known as mixed samples) is a bit more complicated. When the valve is opened for sampling, it is necessary to control the flow rate of the gas sample into the sampling canister, so that the gas is sampled at the same rate throughout the sampling period.
