Fumed silica is a pure, relatively reactive source of silica. It is particularly attractive for alkali-free synthesis because its sodium content is very low. However, the powder is extremely light and fluffy, and as such, is increasingly difficult to handle as the scale of a particular  Zeolite synthesis reaction  increases.
