Fumed silica is  somewhat more expensive (see Table 1) than other silica sources, such as precipitated silica. Not unexpectedly, silica purity also decreases as the cost for a given class of silica raw material decreases. Since very low sodium is thought to be a critical requirement for nano BEA synthesis, we set out to determine if lower cost precipitated silica could be used as raw material rather than more expensive fumed silica.
