USS washers, also known as high tensile washers, are commonly used in various applications to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a bolt or screw, and provide a smooth surface for the nut or bolt head to bear against. USS stands for "United States Standard" and refers to the dimensions of the washers according to American standards.
The size range of USS washers is typically specified in fractional inches, such as 1/4" to 3". This indicates that USS washers can accommodate fasteners with diameters ranging from 1/4" to 3".
USS washers are available with two common coating options: zinc plated and hot-dip galvanized (HDG).
Zinc plated USS washers have a thin layer of zinc electroplated onto the surface. The zinc coating provides a sacrificial layer that helps protect the washer from corrosion. Zinc plating offers moderate corrosion resistance and is commonly used in indoor or low-corrosion environments.
HDG (hot-dip galvanized) USS washers undergo a hot-dip galvanizing process, where they are immersed in a bath of molten zinc. This forms a thicker and more durable zinc coating compared to zinc plating. HDG provides enhanced corrosion resistance and is suitable for outdoor, high-moisture, or corrosive environments.
When selecting between zinc plated and HDG USS washers, consider the specific environmental conditions in which they will be used. If the application involves exposure to moisture, humidity, or corrosive substances, HDG USS washers would provide better corrosion protection. For indoor or low-corrosion environments, zinc plated USS washers may be sufficient.
