The polymer structure of lignin and the existence of many reactive functional groups, under acidic conditions, it can adsorb polar organic matter dissolved in water and net colloidal particles and suspended particulate matter, so as to play the role of flocculant

The flocculation process of lignin can be inferred through the study. The first step is to adsorb colloidal particles in water by electrostatic attraction or hydrogen bonding. In the second step, flake flocs net and sweep colloidal particles and suspended solids to produce settlement.

Lignin and its derivatives can be prepared into anionic flocculants, cationic flocculants and amphoteric flocculants.
