Magnesium chloride is a chloride compound that forms colorless, easily deliquescent crystals. As a typical ionic halide, it is highly soluble in water. The hydrated form (with 6 molecules of crystal water) can be extracted from seawater or brine.
When heated to 95°C, it loses crystal water and begins decomposing at temperatures above 135°C, releasing hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. This compound serves as a raw material for magnesium production and is naturally found in seawater and bittern.
