High Permeability Soft Magnetic Alloy
Material Properties & Characteristics
This high nickel alloy exhibits "gummy" machining characteristics similar to austenitic (300 series) stainless steels. The material offers excellent ductility and is easily cold formed, with strip in the cold rolled condition being ideal for blanking operations.
Machining Specifications
- Tooling: High-speed steel or carbide tools with lard oil lubricant
- Turning: 50 surface ft./min speed with 0.001"-0.002" per revolution feed
- Drilling: 35 surface ft./min speed with 0.001"-0.004" per revolution feed
- Note: Clean parts thoroughly immediately after machining when using water-soluble cutting fluids to prevent corrosion contamination
Forming & Heat Treatment
- Readily formed using standard methods
- Weldable using conventional welding methods
- Not hardenable by heat treatment - can only be hardened by cold working
- Annealing: 2150°F for 4 hours in dry hydrogen atmosphere, furnace cooling to 1100°F, then 500°F/hour cooling from 1100°F to 700°F, followed by air cooling
- Strain relief anneal: 1700°F for 0.5 hour in dry hydrogen or inert gas atmosphere

- Magnetic amplifiers and relays
- Chokes and magnetic heads for magnetic recording devices
- Magnetic shields and various tape wound cores
- Cut cores and laminated cores used in weak magnetic fields
