High Permeability Soft Magnetic Alloy
1J77 is a nickel-iron magnetic alloy containing approximately 80% nickel and 20% iron. Developed in 1914 by physicist Gustav Elmen at Bell Telephone Laboratories, this material offers exceptional magnetic permeability, making it ideal for electrical and electronic equipment as magnetic core material and for magnetic shielding applications.
Compared to ordinary steel, commercial permalloy alloys achieve relative permeability of around 100,000. Beyond high permeability, 1J77 features low coercivity, near-zero magnetostriction, and significant anisotropic magnetoresistance. The low magnetostriction is particularly valuable in industrial applications, allowing thin film usage without stress-induced magnetic property degradation.
While 1J77 has limited ductility and workability, restricting complex shape applications, it remains widely used across radio-electronics, precision instruments, remote control systems, and automatic control systems.
