What is a ball cock
A ball cock, also known as a ball valve or float valve, bibcock valve is a mechanism commonly used in toilet cisterns or tanks,ourdoor tap garden to control the water level. It consists of a hollow sphere or ball attached to an arm or lever. The ball is buoyant and floats on the water surface in the cistern.
The ball cock works in conjunction with a fill valve or inlet valve that supplies water to the cistern. When the water level in the cistern drops below a certain point, the float ball descends, causing the attached arm or lever to activate the fill valve, which opens to allow water to flow into the cistern.
As the water level rises, the float ball also rises with it. Once the ball reaches a predetermined level, it triggers the arm or lever to shut off the fill valve, stopping the flow of water into the cistern. This mechanism helps maintain a consistent water level in the cistern, preventing it from overflowing.
The term "ball cock" is often used specifically in the context of toilet cisterns, but the same principle of a float-operated valve can be found in other water tanks or systems as well.
