How to choose o ring
O ring is widely used in static and dynamic sealing.
When we choose O ring,we need to confirm 3 data:material,size and hardneed.
1Material:The primary consideration for selecting material is the working environment for example the temperature,the fluid and so
on.Common materials for making oring are NBR,FKM and silicone.NBR material can resist temperature of 100 degrees centigrade and it
can also resist water and oil.The advantages of FKM are corrosion resistance, wear resistance and high temperature resistance.But
its price is higher than NBR.Silicone material has many colors and it can resist temperature of 200 degrees centigrade.It is very
elastic.There are also food grade silicone to choose.
2Size:The size of the o ring has 3 data,inner diameter,outer diameter and wire diameter.The outer diameter is equal to the inner
diameter plus two wire diameters.So the size of O ring is generally expressed by inner diameter multiply wire diameter.
When choose O ring for shaft use,the inner diameter of the o ring should be a little bit smaller than the diameter of the shaft so
that the o ring is not easy to fall off.
3Hardness:Low hardness o ring is suitable for low pressure environment.High hardness O ring is suitable for high pressure
environment.So choose low hardness or high hardness oring is according to where you want to use it.
