HYDAC diaphragm accumulators are specifically designed to utilize the compressibility of nitrogen gas in order to store hydraulic energy. As most fluids are practically incompressible, they are unable to store energy on their own. Therefore, the addition of gas is necessary in order for the accumulator to function effectively. The diaphragm serves to separate the gas and fluid compartments within the accumulator.

When pressure increases in the hydraulic circuit, the diaphragm accumulator draws in fluid and compresses the gas, storing hydraulic energy. This energy is then returned to the circuit as pressure decreases, through the expansion of the gas. A poppet, or valve, is incorporated into the diaphragm to prevent its extrusion through the fluid port.

There are two types of diaphragm accumulators manufactured by HYDAC: welded (non-repairable) and threaded (repairable). These have been successfully applied in both industrial and mobile applications for various purposes, including energy storage, maintaining pressure, compensating for leakage, and powering vehicle hydraulic systems such as brakes and suspension.
