Silicon carbide (SiC) is a covalent compound composed of carbon (C) and silicon (Si) with very strong covalent bond. Silicon carbide has a series of advantages such as high thermal conductivity, high hardness, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance and low price. It is widely used in industrial grinding as an abrasive.
Silicon carbide has excellent mechanical properties and relatively low density. Its ceramic or fiber is used for structural parts and protective coatings resistant to high temperature impact and high oxidation in aerospace and spacecraft.
