Gear grinding is an important precision machining technology. It uses specific grinding tools and processes to perform fine machining on the gear tooth surface in order to achieve the goals of improving gear accuracy, improving surface quality, and reducing noise.


The applications of grinding gears:

The principle of grinding gears
 
Gear grinding is the process of using a grinding tool (such as a grinding disc, grinding wheel, etc.) and fine-grained abrasives to apply pressure between the workpiece material and a closely fitting surface (called a grinding plate) to gradually achieve the desired finish and accuracy of the gear tooth surface through relative motion. During the grinding process, liquid abrasive is fed into the gear pair, and as the gear rotates, a small amount of metal is removed to produce the ideal tooth surface contact pattern.


Process requirements for grinding gears
 
Before grinding gears, it is usually necessary to pre-treat the gears to meet the requirements of the grinding process. These requirements include:
 
1. There must be a certain amount of root cutting at the root of the tooth: this is to play the role of an empty knife groove and is conducive to the distribution of residual stress at the root of the gear after carburizing and quenching, thereby improving the bending strength of the gear. If there is no root cutting at the root of the gear before grinding, a step will be generated at the root of the tooth after grinding, resulting in stress concentration, which seriously affects the bending resistance of the gear.
2. The involute length of the gear after grinding should be long enough: to ensure the smooth operation and load-bearing capacity of the gear. Due to the root cutting of the tooth root, the involute length of the gear after grinding may be insufficient, resulting in a decrease in the overlap of the gear, which will cause vibration and noise during the meshing process.
