Stainless steel is an alloy composed of iron and chromium, with other elements such as carbon added to achieve specific properties. The chromium content is typically at least 11%.
Iron possesses excellent physical properties, such as strength and durability, but it is susceptible to corrosion and wear. Adding chromium to iron significantly improves its resistance to corrosion and wear.
Yes, stainless steel can be machined. In fact, there are many different ways to machine stainless steel. Once you understand the properties of stainless steel and the appropriate machining techniques, machining stainless steel becomes relatively easy.
Stainless steel is a diverse material. Many people mistakenly believe that stainless steel is a specific alloy. In reality, there are over 150 different grades of stainless steel. These grades are divided into several main categories based on their composition and properties.
Austenitic Stainless Steel
- Features: Offers good corrosion resistance and formability, typically containing high percentages of nickel and chromium.
- Common grades: 304, 316.
Ferritic Stainless Steel
- Features: Offers high strength and good corrosion resistance, typically containing low nickel content.
- Common grades: 430, 446.
Martensitic Stainless Steel
- Features: Offers high strength and hardness, suitable for heat treatment.
- Common grades: 410, 420.
Duplex Stainless Steel
- Features: Combines the properties of austenite and ferrite, offering excellent corrosion resistance and strength.
- Common grades: 2205, 2507.
Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel
- Features: Increases strength through the precipitation hardening process, suitable for high-strength applications. Common grades: 17-4 PH, 15-5 PH.
Stainless steel does present some challenges during machining, which are common in many machining operations. However, these machining issues can be effectively avoided by taking appropriate precautions.
Overheating
One of the most common machining issues is overheating. In the case of stainless steel alloys, overheating can compromise the material's corrosion resistance.
- Avoid overheating by monitoring the workpiece temperature.
- Adjust cutting speeds and feed rates appropriately.
Surface Thermal Reactions
When heated, stainless steel may exhibit a colored surface reaction, a phenomenon closely associated with the pickling process.
Pickling is the process of treating stainless steel with hydrochloric or sulfuric acid to remove the oxide layer and restore the alloy's corrosion resistance.
Purpose: Acid effectively dissolves oxides on the steel surface, ensuring that the material's properties are maintained.

- 1. Can I get a quote without drawings?
Sure, we appreciate to receive your samples, pictures or drafts with detailed dimensions for accurate quotation.
- 2.Will my drawings be divulged if you benefit?
No, we pay much attention to protect our customers’ privacy of drawings, signing NDA is also accepted if need.
- 3. Can you provide samples before mass production?
Sure, sample fee is needed, will be returned when mass production if possible.
- 4. How about the lead time?
Generally, 1-2 weeks for samples, 3-4 weeks for mass production.
- 5. How do you control the quality?
(1) Material inspection--Check the material surface and roughly dimension.
(2) Production inspection--Each production section will check the key dimensions and appearance.
Before surface treatment, do a good job of product packaging to avoid bumps and injuries. And check visual inspection
(3) Sampling inspection--Check the quality before sending to the warehouse.
(4) Pre-shipment inspection--100% inspected by QC assistants before shipment. - 6. What will you do if we receive poor quality parts?
Please kindly send us the pictures, our engineers will find the solutions and remake them for you asap.
