In 1946, Enzo Ferrari decided to create his own car brand, and renowned engine design engineer GIOACHINOCOLOMBO, although employed by Alfa Romeo, still met with Enzo. When Enzo mentioned the 1.5-liter engine plan, Kolombo suggested manufacturing a 12 cylinder engine, and Enzo readily agreed. During the traditional Italian summer vacation in 1945, Kolombo outlined the initial concept in his sister's backyard, using a "super square engine" configuration, where the cylinder diameter is greater than the piston stroke to reduce piston speed and achieve higher speeds. In 1947, the first Ferrari model, the 125S, was equipped with a 1.5-liter V12 engine designed by Kolombo and won 6 out of 13 races. The 1948 125F1 race car was also equipped with this engine and won third place in its first race (Italian Grand Prix). Afterwards, the Kolombo V12 engine continued to improve, providing power for many classic Ferrari models, such as the short wheelbase 250 GT BERLINETTA in 1959, the 250 GTO in 1962, etc. Until 1989, its capacity reached 4.9 liters, making it one of the most famous and longest lived V12 engines in history
