- Cool the engine – Allow the engine to cool completely before beginning work
- Drain coolant – Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing
- Remove the thermostat housing – Unbolt and carefully remove the thermostat housing cover
- Remove the old thermostat – Note the orientation for correct installation of the new unit
- Clean the housing – Clean the housing and mounting surface, removing all old gasket material
- Inspect the housing – Check for cracks, corrosion, or warping; replace if necessary
- Prepare the new thermostat – Test the new thermostat (optional) in hot water to verify operation
